Anime clothing has become an increasingly popular trend in recent years, with fans all over the world embracing the bold, colorful, and often unconventional styles seen in their favorite anime shows. From cosplay costumes to streetwear inspired by anime characters, anime clothing has become an integral part of the anime fandom and an influential force in the fashion industry.
In this article, we will take a closer look at anime clothing, exploring its history, impact, and controversies. We will delve into the evolution of anime clothing and how it has influenced fashion and culture both in Japan and around the world.
A Brief History of Anime Clothing
Anime clothing can be traced back to the early days of anime, when Japanese animators began experimenting with new and innovative styles of animation. In the 1960s, anime began to gain popularity in Japan, and with it came a new form of fashion that reflected the vibrant and dynamic energy of the medium.
One of the earliest examples of anime clothing was the school uniform, which became a common feature in anime shows set in high schools. These uniforms typically consisted of a blazer, shirt, tie, and skirt or pants, and became iconic symbols of Japanese school culture.
As anime grew in popularity throughout the 1970s and 1980s, so too did the influence of anime clothing. Shows like “Mobile Suit Gundam” and “Dragon Ball” introduced bold and dynamic designs for their characters’ outfits, inspiring a new wave of fashion that embraced futuristic and sci-fi themes.
In the 1990s, anime clothing began to expand into more diverse and unconventional styles. The popularity of shows like “Neon Genesis Evangelion” and “Sailor Moon” led to the emergence of the “kawaii” aesthetic, characterized by bright colors, cute designs, and a focus on youth culture.
Today, anime clothing continues to evolve and inspire new trends in fashion and culture. From cosplay costumes to streetwear, anime clothing has become a significant part of the anime fandom and a growing force in the fashion industry.

Controversies Surrounding Anime Clothing
Anime clothing has been the subject of controversy and criticism, particularly regarding its representation of women. Many anime shows feature female characters in revealing and sexualized outfits, leading to debates about the objectification of women in Critics argue that anime clothing perpetuates harmful stereotypes and contributes to a culture that objectifies and hypersexualizes women. They also point to the lack of diversity in anime clothing, with most designs featuring thin, young, and conventionally attractive characters.
However, defenders of anime clothing argue that it is a form of self-expression and empowerment for fans, who are free to interpret and incorporate anime designs in their own way. They also point out that anime features a wide range of female characters, many of whom are strong and complex individuals with their own agency and power.
Despite the controversies surrounding anime clothing, it remains a popular and influential trend in fashion and culture. Its bold and innovative designs have inspired new trends and styles, and its impact can be seen in everything from streetwear to high-end fashion.

A new kind of drama has taken over social media recently, the generational war. A few Gen Z influencers on TikTok made some choice comments on the iconic fashion moments of their older siblings.
This lead to a kind of feud between the two. Now we are not here to say what is right and what is wrong, we are going to cover everything from a neutral 3rd person perspective. We believe you should wear whatever you want and it shouldn’t be up for debate.
So to make your styling choices simpler we will walk you through what’s considered Gen Z and what is considered millennial fashion.
Skinny Jeans VS Baggy jeans
Now, this actually kind of started the whole generational feud. Gen Z believes that skinny jeans are now out of fashion, which made a few millennials feel a little bad because this was a defining garment of their generation (or maybe because that is the only thing they owned and did not want to stop wearing)
We also feel that Gen Z fashion has also been highly influenced by the pandemic, this is when people started wearing more comfy pieces. People did not want to feel any more restricted than they already were.
Harry Styles in his classic Skinny Jeans and Connan Gray in the generation staple loose denim.
Gen Z is now wearing baggy pants, shorts, trousers, jeans. Basically everything. Also, this style has also become popular after Billie Eilish become one of the biggest Gen Z icons, so naturally, her style was emulated a lot and it trickled down to men’s fashion.
Adidas Trainers VS Chunky Sneakers
The Adidas three stripes trainers were the biggest thing in 2017, literally, everyone was wearing them, regardless of their gender. Now that is also considered something from the past.
Gen Z has moved on to chunky sneakers. That is the new big thing. Again we feel this is due to the pandemic, chunky sneakers are so much more comfy and versatile compared to those trainers. We say this because brands like Yeezy by Kanye are bringing out so much variety in chunky sneakers and looking at that other smaller brands are also now following the trend.

Athleisure VS Casuals
Millennials were never really big on “athleisure” as an aesthetic. They never fully accepted it as something to be donned even while running errands. They usually put on what was known as casuals, which was a tee shirt and trousers or shorts and minimum accessories. And matching co-ord sets were reserved for jogging or gyming.
But Gen Z really brought a new aesthetic (and unintentionally a completely new segment in fashion) known as athleisure. It is, essentially, a mix of sportswear that can be doubled as leisurewear. It doesn’t matter if you play any games or frequent the gym, you can still sport the athleisure look and you will be considered stylish.
TikTok and Gen Z have made “athleisure” so popular that brands like Louis Vuitton have shown clothes styled in that way in multiple collections to appeal to a younger crowd and stay relevant.
Huge bags VS Mini bags
Millennials were a fan of big bags. That was considered “manly”. Bags in solid bold colors with almost no design or innovation. If any notable designs were seen that would be on Gucci monogram bags. Millennials only carried bags either for traveling overseas or to the office, a “small” bag only meant a wallet. And other times most of their essentials were thrown in their female counterparts’ purses.
Huge bags as shown in the Louis Vuitton menswear show by the late Virgil Abloh
But Gen Z on the other hand said “No we won’t be lugging around with huge unnecessary bags.” They brought the concept of mini bags to carry essentials like id proof, money, small water bottles, sunscreen, etc.
Mini bags were showcased by Dior, Fendi, Jacquemus, and Louis Vuitton.
The trend of mini bags can be traced back to Jacquemus, when they showed their mini (barely 1 or 2 inches) bags, carried around by Lizzo. This was then emulated by men’s fashion, and this really gave the designers the leeway to create new designs and bring around innovation.
You can find extremely cool bags on Shein, check out our story on 30+ Best Items to Buy From Shein.
Graphic Sweaters VS Graphic Tees
It’s not global warming that decides our fashion now, it’s social media. Millennials loved graphic tees, a style perhaps popularized by talented Black Hip Hop rappers. I mean if you are a millennial you obviously owned at least one graphic tee if not over a dozen.
These tees usually had some cheesy/motivational quotes, iconic cartoons, or abstract graphic print. But one thing that was a stamp of millennial culture is band tees, we all had a tee-shirt of our favorite band which was either a conversation starter or a fight starter if you didn’t know at least 5 songs of the band.
Joe Jonas in a graphic tee and Lil Nas X and Jaden Smith in Graphic hoodies.
But that is too old-fashioned now. Gen Z is donning huge, baggy, oversized graphic sweaters usually styled with (yes, you guessed it) baggy denim and small bags. They have also included tote bags as a part of their generation’s identity as a response to the current environmental crisis.
These graphic sweaters/college pullovers can also be styled with a turtleneck as an effective layering style during the winter.
Luxury Brands VS Thirfting
Nike, Louis Vuitton, Ralph Lauren, Supreme, Armani are some of the most beloved brands of millennials. Walking into a room in full designer was considered a status symbol, a sign of ultra-luxe high fashion.
But Gen Z has flipped the script and now they are all about thrifting and getting vintage clothes AND flaunting them. Consider it a trend or a fad it is honestly a boon that finally a generation is thinking about their carbon footprint and changing their actions to bring change. Peer pressure of this kind is healthy, pressure your friends in buying from sustainable
Haven/t we all heard stories about someone finding some vintage treasure in the racks of thrift shops? In this story, we’ll help you become a part of that minority. Yes, thrifting for treasure takes time but with our tips and a few don’ts, you will surely get an edge over others.
So for those who live under a rock, and don’t know what thrifting is – in simple words, it is buying good quality used second-hand items at a very discounted price. In terms of fashion, you get clothes, accessories, shoes, bags, etc at thrift shops. What is amazing is that this gives extended life to clothes that are in good condition and prevents them from ending up in landfills.
But, if you have a really good eye, you can also find amazing high fashion designer pieces at these thrift shops. How do they end up there? Well, people who don’t need them anymore sell them to thrift shops that put them up for sale. So if you can buy clothes from Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Zegna, or Dries Van Noten, don’t lose hope, chances are that you may find their clothes selling for just a couple of dollars.
Let’s see what tips will help you find exactly what you need –
It is advisable to spend some time doing research about the stores you are going to visit. You should also define your personal style and try to match it with the store to find good pieces. You subconsciously already know what your style is, but it is good to list it out.
Say, you are a college student and have more streetwear style clothes in your wardrobe, dig deeper in those racks at the stores.
Now you can also go with a particular occasion in mind, which leads us to our next point
Know what you want.
It is very easy to get overwhelmed and lost by looking at the huge racks and piles of clothes and accessories. To avoid that, spend 10 minutes preparing a list of all that you need, so your shopping will be focused and time-saving. Once you realize you have the pieces you can leave the store.
Listen, even if you have a list it will take a lot of time just to find good quality pieces, as there are way too many options for you to be able to sort through each rack. So take some snacks too much on, don’t rub your hands on the clothes though, take some friends and wear appropriate clothes in case the shop doesn’t have a trial room, you can try to measure it up to make sure they fit you.
This is a tip for the clothes you buy, but especially the ones you thrift in. You are shopping for clothes somebody bought that fit their body and that person may have had it tailored for them.
Many fashion houses are currently focusing on creating well-tailored garments to stand strong in the market. Clothes that fit you well look elevated, even if they are just a couple of bucks, and they make you feel confident, an attitude no amount of money can buy.
Stay in the Good Books.
Most clothes are given to thrift stores for really cheap and working in retail is hard and tiresome. All you have to do is be polite, patient and not haggle for the already cheap pieces. It really doesn’t take much on your part but it really means a lot to them if you can make their jobs a little easier.
If you get into the good books of the employees and the owner you can start asking for favors like getting insider information on restocking, any new exciting pieces, or even get extra discounts.
You can also create a good relationship by constantly selling or donating your old clothes.
Material knowledge
If you want to check if a particular piece is by the original designer, you should learn to identify materials. Real cotton or blended fabrics, and if the fabric is durable or not. This only comes with practice and feeling the fabrics directly, no amount of youtube videos can teach this.
Once you dive deep into the fabrics world you will realize there’s a lot to explore in terms of the varieties of wool, silk, etc. But if that is not your cup of tea, make sure you can easily identify a few fabrics at the least. This will also help you ascertain the accurate price of the garment.
Yes, most pieces are cheap but some are also overpriced for their quality, say leather boots for example. You need to check the quality and make sure you get a good number of wear out of it
Buy less, visit more
Most of the time shops like Goodwill have new pieces coming in pretty quickly. You can buy 1 or 2 items a week but make sure you wear it for a long time and not throw it away after a few wears.
Via – https://unsplash.com/photos/PQmXUxmfR44
This way even the owners realize that you are there for a long time and will make constant sales even if it is in fewer quantities and they will look out for you, reserve some pieces for you if you ask them too and help you out generally.
And now for some don’ts to make sure your shopping experience is smooth –
Don’t be in a hurry
This is a recipe for disaster. You should always make sure you have a good amount of time to devote. Look at all the seamlines, the stitches, the zippers and check the details. A lot can be determined about the quality of the garment by small details like this.
Don’t buy certain items without trying
In case of tight clothes, bodycon, body-hugging garments make sure to try them on. And never buy underwear from thrift stores, they are not clean at all. In case of certain accessories make sure you can style them with different outfits in your closet.
Don’t bargain
This is the last place you want to bargain at. Yes, the belt is used but you are getting it for much cheaper, trying to haggle is only going to annoy the employees which are best to avoid.

The nylon bag along with the hardware can be trusted blindly. The contrast of shiny leather straps and matte nylon adds a little spice to your rather boring formal clothes.
And the fanny pack is back in style! Better get one soon. This classic black fanny pack is the perfect addition to elevate your look and feel like a fashion influencer, while still being able to carry stuff.
Totally Boho, totally chic. Tinted glasses in super cool shapes need to have their own aesthetic, if they already don’t. The best way to style these glasses is with a blue or red or yellow outfit. Or even a full black look and these glasses will bring you the attention you desire.
This theme of pixelated graphic design became popular in the makeup world by creative artists, which now has trickled down to fashion, and we love it. There’s nothing cooler than red and black glasses with white pixelated graphics on them.
The laser-cut pixelated edge of the frame further pushes the fantasy.
These are the best glasses we have seen, wouldn’t you agree? They really put Kim Kardashian to shame. The extreme simple block, rectangle geometric design makes it really unique and never seen before. You will for sure be the talk of the day with these glasses on.
Let’s reel back a little and look at some classic designs. A rounded metal frame glass, in comparison to previous glasses, may seem simple, but the black and gold combination is a proven way to elevate your look to a level of high fashion.
These are similar to the previous round glasses with a metal frame, but also so much different and innovative. Shein is spoiling us with variety we can’t choose from.
The actual glasses on this can be moved up and down, they are attached to the frame at the top.
Hats
This section is more about personal preference and style rather than must-haves nevertheless here are the best hats on Shein.
Beanies are a great way to cover your hair up on a bad hair day. Well, they are also very functional in winter, but we love the aesthetic more than the appropriateness of the weather, right? The best part is that it comes as a pair of two. These are graphic printed, if you are looking for variety, Shein also has –
Over time, hats have lost their practicality and only become a fashion statement, Shein has perfectly understood this. They are offering lightweight, cotton baseball caps with flat fronts in a black and white combo with design in the front.
Mind=Blown. That is the only way to describe this reversible bucket hat. One side has a tie dye like acid washed type print and the other is a plain black. You can either feel good with the sunny side up or you can stay anonymous with the black side.
Two very popular ideas merged together. Does Shein ever do anything not cool? Houndstooth print on a beret, now feel like a Parisian artist, even if you’re not from Paris or an artist.
The hat is semi structured which means it holds some shape on its own and then contours and takes the shape of your head when you put it on.
A very typical bandana but here with a fun twist. The thing you should notice in all of these bandanas are the prints, they’re so artistic and colourful. You can style them as the perfect accessory to complement your outfit.
The skull cover has a very unique design, the ears have their own place and it comes down to your neck. The print is also quite interesting, where there is a contrast of the skull with pretty design.
We have added this here, for the scarf looks very expensive and classy. The plaid texture in the same shade creates a kind of dimension that adds an element of interest. You can style this on a cool day with your denim or with a suit.
The colours? Great. The fabric? High quality and lustrous. The Print? Super cute. What else do you want in a scarf? We must say the opposite colours of design is a very smart and eye-catching print.
Shiny fabric with a dark leaf print on it, this leans more towards street style but if styled correctly can be incorporated and passed as a high fashion look. It’s super light, flowy and the design is very clean and minimalistic.
Made out of shearling, this V neck shirt has a slight stretch to it. It looks so cozy and comfortable although the heavy texture makes it appropriate for late night online dates or early morning meetings.
Wake up feeling like royalty in this high contrast print satin robe with a belt. The collar is described as shawl collar and seems to be made out of a much cozy-er material.
The best part about the hoodie is that the camo pattern print though is a small part of the overall hoodie, blends well with the black. The kangaroo pockets look so warm and inviting, who can resist them? And, frankly, why would you? Get yours today.
Fashion seasons and collections come and go but Shein has great clothes available all year round. These clothes are versatile and serve their purpose. The hyper fast-fashion brand has almost everything you will need in your wardrobe, so why not hoard it?
They sell great hoodies, jackets to shirts and denim, trousers, and even accessories. It is easy to get overwhelmed by seeing a wide array of clothes and accessories at such cheap prices. It needs a lot of time and a creative eye to look for expensive-looking garments and accessories. If you don’t have either, it’s OK we have your back.
Let us walk you through our findings, we are bringing to you jackets, shirts, trousers, and hoodies. All the items on our list are affordable but look expensive, and with the right styling, you will look red carpet ready.
Textured Button Front
A button front is such a staple piece, I own it, you own it, everyone does. So why not elevate it to look like high-end luxury shirts? This shirt is the definition of that.
The camel-colored shirt has a patched pocket, regular fit, made from polyester, so you know it’s got a long life.
Styling this shirt won’t take much effort, you can go casual with black pants or denim or you can dress it up with expensive accessories and structured blazers or outerwear.
Hoodie Button Front
Well, this is the combination of the best qualities of both – a hoodie and a button front. The two-toned garment makes it look rich and expensive. You will thank us once you wear it.
The hoodie has drawstrings for your comfort plus it is 70% cotton and 30% linen, which makes it ultra-breathable while still having a structure.
You can wear this as a casual or smart casual look with denim or in winter you can also layer it with white or khaki-colored coats.
Hooded Puffer
Talking about winter, this is the best piece for this winter. A classic black hooded long-sleeved puffer jacket. Cheap. Functional. Looks expensive. What more can one ask for?
It has drawstrings, pockets (for that extra storage) and is made from 100% polyester, so durability is a given. Even the lining is made from polyester!
You can style it as the image shows here, making it an all-black outfit. Or play with colors, add white, red, green to it. Maybe a pop of orange if you want that hippy streetwear vibe.
Pullover
You can style your hooded Puffer with this cream-colored, woven textured, cozy, and comfy high neck pullover and show up to date to impress or family dinner.
It looks so luxurious that you can style this as an individual piece, as a casual outfit or it can be worn as formal office wear when it’s too cold.
What we love about this, besides the fact that it looks expensive, is the light creamy off-white color. It can be styled so easily that you don’t really need any assistance. Pair it with other classic staples like leather jackets.
Oh, you’re looking for a leather jacket too? You’re gonna love this piece.
Leather jacket
Once associated with the biker community, this garment has since been reimagined by designers all over and continues to evolve as we speak. It has become a standard gender-fluid garment, where it makes everyone look and feel sexy, no matter the place or time.
This jacket is PU leather, the lapels and silver metal detailing on it give it a rather masculine feel which contrasts the soft, supple, and shiny leather.
A go-to garment when you’re in a hurry and need to show up stylish, make sure to add it to your cart if you haven’t already.
Plaid trousers
Nothing makes a man hotter than well fitter trousers, and when it’s corduroy it falters your body a lot better and it’s comfortable, unlike other fabrics that may be rough for your skin.
This recognizable print has made a feature in every celebrity’s closet for a reason. It looks expensive!
Comfort and look-wise, there’s no competition at all. The fit is tapered, but we suggest you get it tailored to your preference since everyone’s body is different and have it fit your liking.
These trousers can be donned for formal events and smart casuals. Put it together with a suit and vest or just a black shirt and overcoat, as per the event. You may want to steer clear of the look you’re going for is casual or streetwear.
Black shirt
A man’s wardrobe is never complete without a black shirt, and that has been a fact for decades now. No matter what your style is, this is an absolute must-have.
A clean-cut, tailored to your fit, black shirt goes well with a suit, trousers, blazer, or jacket. The versatility has been proven over the decades by celebrities, you need to focus on getting a piece in your wardrobe.
Colour Block shirt
With the new rise in demand for sustainability, patchwork as a design has also become popular. Along with it, this shirt has color blocking which is another classy trend, often associated with high fashion.
This JW Anderson-Esque patchwork shirt has earthy tones complemented by dark deep emerald green.
Honestly, this shirt needs to be the center of attention. Don’t overdo it with the styling. Nothing screams expensive more than a minimalistic style. If you wish, add a necklace, sunglasses, and a beanie as per the weather.
Double trouble
The practicality of long sleeve parka has been combined with the snug feeling of a hoodie. The jacket is made out of cotton and lined with fleece. Fleece fabric has the kind of texture which immediately makes you feel cozy during chilly winters and looks expensive.
This hooded jacket has drawstrings, can be worn inside out too as it has a clean lining and pockets on both sides, so you can wear it anyhow you want and you’ll get extra pockets.
You can style it as an all-black outfit or flip it inside out and make full earthy tones look. The full black look will make you seem mysterious and cool and the earthy tones look will give the impression of being humble and grounded.

You can go all out on prints, mix and match 3 to 4 prints to create a fantasy outfit, or if you want to play safe, perhaps you’re a beginner, start by styling one bold print with your casual/regular outfits, like your denim or chinos or crisp white tees.
You can also style your prints with other trends, keep reading to know more.
College boy aesthetic.
Close to 95% of the TikTok users are Gen Z, so it becomes obvious that trends that include them do well. And the “college boy” aesthetic is a part of that. The aesthetic is just as the name suggests, what a college boy would wear in his daily life.
Now, there are other categories under this too like eboy, goth, nerd guy, tech dude, etc, etc. But for now, let’s begin with a regular super stylish college boy. It is mainly oversized clothes, tote bags, basic colors, with a mix of pastels and graphic printed clothes.

You can find all these in your wardrobe right now, all you have to do is put them specifically. You should lean towards tee shirts, hoodies, and cute sweater vests. Go ahead and style them with matching colors, accessorize your whole look with pastel bucket hats, or fanny packs, or just a tote bag.
Anonymous Star
Want to get that “celebrity trying to hide from paparazzi” look? We’ll look no further, an all-black outfit with a face mask will give you a high level of anonymity if you are trying to avoid some acquaintances. Now that TikTok influencers are famous enough for paparazzi to run after them, this look is super popular on the platform.
This look can be donned on a date at a super expensive restaurant, or a formal gala with your superiors, or even for just casually running errands, It is that versatile. All you have to do is get accessories to either dress up or dress down based on the occasion.

Tip – If it is a formal event or a date style the look with silver accessories, and have your clothes fit you properly. In case of casual events, you can opt for oversized hoodies, layer it as much as you like, with a tee-shirt, overcoat/blazer, and feel free to style it with track pants,
Accessories –
Oversized
If you are our regular reader, you would remember a few months back we forecast the trend of baggy, oversized denim. Gen Z decides the trends on TikTok and they fully said “RIP skinny jeans.”
But it is not only denim, all your clothes are now getting oversized. Tight and uncomfortable clothes are no more practical after the hectic year we’ve all had. No one wants to feel cramped up in anything,
The Gen Z mindset of wanting more of a sense of being free and yourself have ushered the trend of comfortable and oversized clothes. From your formal wear to tracks everything is now coming in an oversized version and business-wise doing better than fitted clothes.

Tip – Opt for oversized clothes in semi-structured fabrics. You don’t want the garment to stand on its own, but you also don’t want it to completely stick to your body. So, in the case of semi-structured garments, they will hold their shape while flaunting your natural features at the same time which makes sure your body shape isn’t lost in the garment.
Since the clothes themselves will take so much space make sure your accessories are at a minimum. Don’t try to overdo the bling and layer to a maximum of 2 layers.
Outerwear, specifically, oversized outerwear.
Fall means layering and yes, even your outerwear is now getting oversized. Not sure how to style it? Go through our ultimate guide on how you can rock oversized clothes.
Keep in mind the fit of the rest of the look when styling an oversized jacket. Let it be known that, now, oversized blazers are perfectly alright at high-end events and parties. So ditch the tight three-piece suit and let loose and party all night in a super loose-fitting blazer and trousers.

Also, there is no rule that you need to style your oversized outerwear with only skinny clothes. Remember, in 2021, skinny clothes ≠ practical. Pull out your flared pants and large hoodies to style with oversized coats. Get those chunky Nike shoes you always wanted and read Ovalstylefashion to stay on trend not only this fall but every season.
The Black community has always been incredibly talented but has had to fight to get attention. Historically, the fashion industry (like most other industries) has not treated them correctly. Even though designers pulled references from Black culture and made it mainstream.
Even though the industry has been doing its bit for representation. It is only on the surface level, to get approval (and not get canceled). The actual representation has been missing when it comes to high-level decision-making teams and more.
The customers are the ones who have ushered in this change, demanding more and more. We need to keep this energy up in all fields. We have to keep the momentum going and not make it a “trend” for social media.
When it comes to business, fashion has always been dominated by white cis men. Now, we have Black people gaining more power and authority, creatively and business-wise too, rightfully so. We have compiled a list of Black-owned fashion houses you need to spend some huge coins at. Take a look at how these 8 menswear brands are changing the fashion landscape.
Ahluwalia
Priya Ahluwalia was awarded and given the title of Leader of Change at the 2021 Fashion Awards held on 30th November, for her namesake brand.
Her sustainable brand pulls inspiration from her upbringing in London coupled with her Indian-Nigerian background. She makes use of deadstock fabric to tell contemporary, powerful, and compelling stories.
Take a look at her Autumn Winter 2020 collection ‘Frequency’. Her looks are artistic and very wearable at the same time.
Off-White.
Virgil Abloh is one of the greatest designers of our generation, without a doubt. He has created and ushered in a completely new style into the world of men’s fashion.
Heading Louis Vuitton and Off-White, Virgil has been successful in creating a huge fan base all around. For his 2021 RTW show, Vogue noted that while talking to him backstage he said – “ If I were to look at my body of work, I think I’ve grown up the most in the shortest amount of time. I think it’s rebelling against the younger version of myself. And that’s the first time I’ve actually said that.”
Mowalola
Nigerian-born London-based designer Mowalola graduated from CSM, is known for working with materials leather and PVC.
Her work is an eye-opener and will make you think about how society treats black people. Her iconic pristine white suit with bullet shots and blood dripping print, a commentary on the rising number of innocent black people killed by white people, is one of the most powerful garments in fashion.
Lil Nas X donned the suit for his SNL performance adding another conversation of the unjust treatment of members of the LGBTQIA community.
She is appointed as a creative director for Kanye West’s Gap collaboration.
Pyer Moss
Pyer Moss has been an advocate since day one. Kerby Jean Raymon made his stance by having Black icons as his primary source of inspiration for his collections. And he places this inspiration right in the center of the collection so it’s undeniably recognized.
For his Haute Couture show, he decided to let the world know the designs and inventions that we use as everyday items were made by innovative Black people who were not given proper recognition. His RTW looks, like the ones below, also have a theme of empowering Black creators of incredible knowledge.
His talent has made him a star and it will not dim anytime soon.
A-Cold-Wall*
A-Cold-Wall* was started by Samuel Ross as an extension of his research process. He was inspired by the British class system, the designer has a rich background of references to get inspired by. A-Cold-Wall looks closely at the codes of social construct and the aesthetic and language of high-end, modern, luxury menswear.
Just this last season, Samuel Ross, wanted to explore abstract ideas and modern architecture and turn them into shapes that cover the body almost like a cocoon. Even though he took a conceptual turn with the silhouettes, he described his clothes as “steeped in functionality.”
Fear of God
Jerry Lorenzo’s brain Child Fear Of God started as a streetwear brand. He started without knowing much about the industry and its workings and is now one of the hottest names in the industry after having a creatively innovative brand and working with Kanye West and Justin Beiber and collaborating with brands like Ermenegildo Zegna.
Now, Fear Of God has donned the garb of luxury. The house has now incorporated strong tailoring, knitwear, and accessories like shoes, backpacks, etc.
For his seventh collection, he released lookbook images, take a look at a few of our favorite looks from the collection.
Come Back As A Flower
CBAAF says they make “high vibrational” clothing, meaning all their clothes are ethically made, with recycled cotton and hand-dyeing techniques. And no, it’s not just buzzwords thrown together, CBAAF has proved their mettle with their amazing creations.
It has a kind of nostalgic yet contemporary and a very homely feel to it. It makes you feel like an art student in a cute rustic town in Rome.
They make wearable clothes and focus on high-quality essentials that you can flaunt.
Denim Tears
Tremaine Emory’s collection released in September of this year was based on the unjust treatment of the British colonizers. He beautifully translated it into clothes, he showcased his take on the British flag as a huge chunk of their history is the senseless violence against generations of Black and Asian communities.
In an interview with The Face, Emory let us know that “A big part of this collection for me is inspired by Steve McQueen’s Small Axe series”
His signature is funky tees, hoodies, tracks, and jeans with vivid iconography on them, like this Black Maddona tee. His jeans also have a strong story to tell.
Streetwear is without a doubt a major part of the fashion industry. It’s extremely diverse and dynamic.
Streetwear is super stylish casual wear. Earlier, (and even today) streetwear styles used to include high-end designer knockoffs but now huge houses like Louis Vuitton, Balenciaga, Burberry, Gucci, Prada have included streetwear styles into most of their collections. The tipping point we believe was when Moschinos wing sneakers were seen on every streetwear enthusiast’s feet, the fashion world quickly jumped on the train to tap the market.
Streetwear style originated in New York in the 90s with the rise of pop culture but today it pulls references from Japanese Streetwear, K-pop (with the influence of bands like BTS), sports, hip hop, and haute couture, as we mentioned. The style is usually sported by the youth, earlier it was mostly youth who were into skating and surfing, but with Instagram and TikTok, it has now found a place in every (under 30) person’s closet. It is now a multi-billion dollar industry and millions of people regard streetwear as a lifestyle. So let’s look at the best brands you need to keep an eye out for
Nike
The ever-iconic Nike started as a brand that made sneakers for the best athletes in the world. Now, along with the best sneakers, they have diversified into clothes too.
As we mentioned, sports gear has a great influence on streetwear, so it was obvious that when Nike launched their clothes section it became a huge hit with the youth. It became a privilege to own and don pieces having the swoosh logo.
From athletic wear to athleisure to outerwear they have it all.
Supreme
The streetwear brand created almost an empire and army of Supreme lovers dedicated to the brand. James Jebbia founded the brand 27 years ago and still runs it. Their creative take on how they feel the youth loves to dress is impeccable.
The Amerian brand launches a limited range of new items every week making sure that their customer’s wardrobe stays up-to-date with an exclusive drip.
Supreme has had a very strong history of collaborations with Louis Vuitton, Rolex, and many more.
Heron Preston
Heron established his namesake brand to make an impact on menswear with his impressive quality of creating iconic imagery. And also the brain to pull references from different places and blend them perfectly to create a buzz in the market.
The brand has been on the same level as Supreme, Off White, etc as far as popularity goes.
His designs are very eye-catching and stand out from the rest of the crowd very easily.
In personal life, Heron is also a DJ and has dj’d for events organized by GQ, Ford, Supreme, and even at Coachella. A lot of his designs reflect his love for music and like any creative person, there are chances that 2 or more of his interests collide and become one to create something much bigger and impactful.
CDG Play
Comme des Garcons Play is the diffusion line of CDG. The luxury house that creates wildlife avant-garde wearable art, CDG Play creates more casual garments.
They have a wide range of joggers, hoodies, printed tee shirts with their Instagram famous (among influencers and celebs) bug-eyed heart logo. Every brand has something instantly recognizable logo or motif attached to it.
Vetements
Vetememts (meaning French for clothing) showed their first collection in 2014-15 in Paris. It has a very distinct style of making provocative designs popular, they create magic while usually commenting on contemporary issues, like climate change and politics.
Founded by Demna Gvasalvia, who is now the creative director of Balenciaga, Vetements has a range of hoodies, track pants, printed tee shirts, underwear, and shorts.
These looks from Vetements encapsulate their essence, the main idea, and how they have such a grip over the streetwear market. It acts as a one-shop stop for all your needs. One visit to the store and you can create your entire wardrobe. Very few brands have been able to achieve this feat.
Just this last season, Samuel Ross, wanted to explore abstract ideas and turn them into shapes that cover the body almost like a cocoon. Even though he took a conceptual turn with the silhouettes, he described his clothes as “steeped in functionality.”
How can someone not be in complete awe of his designs? They are not only functional but also very aesthetically pleasing. The way he puts colours together is very unique, he may be following Pier Paolo Piccioli’s steps when it comes to colour blocking.
Yohji Yamamoto
He rose to fame for his dark aesthetic that he introduced to women’s wear decades ago. He then beautifully translated it to menswear as well. He also became a household name for his unique style which is regarded as avant-garde tailoring, and dark aesthetic.
Yamamoto may not exactly be a streetwear brand, he leans more towards high fashion. But to justify, it is his style aesthetic and impact on the streetwear style that got him a title on this list.
Vogue noted, and we agree, that with his latest collection “Yamamoto followed himself, not the current trend for skimp and skin reveal. Still, there’s a sensuality to the way the volumes of fabrics draped and moved around the fragile bodies of the models.”
